Thunder softball falls to Calvin in a pair of games

Rosemont, Ill. - The Thunder softball team played Calvin University in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex. The doublheader was originally scheduled for Wednesday at Ruth Leedy Field, however with rain in the forecast the games were relocated to the indoor facility in Rosemont. Calvin was a 3-1 victor in the first game. The Knights earned a 3-2 win in the second game that was halted after five innings due to time limitations. The Thunder (9-5) travel to University of Chicago on Friday for a doubleheader against the Maroons.

Calvin won today's opening game 3-1 as the Knights scored three runs, on five hits, with one error and the Thunder plated one run, with three hits, and two errors. Thunder starter Emilie Gist (6-2) worked all seven innings, allowing three runs, all earned. She scattered five hits, with 11 strikeouts and seven walks. Janette Oh, Paige Andrews and Claire Busch each collected a single for the Thunder. 

The Knights scored twice in the top of the third inning to gain a 2-0 lead in the opener. Calvin added a run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Wheaton tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for the 3-1 final score.

Calvin won the second game 3-2 as the Knights tallied three runs, on six hits, with two errors, while the Thunder plated two runs, on two hits, with no errors. Alese Antonello (3-3) pitched five innings for Wheaton, allowing three earned runs, on six hits, striking out eight with six walks. Ashley Carter hit a triple in the contest and Paige Andrews added a double. 

The Thunder scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to gain an early 2-0 lead. Carter led off the inning with a triple that she lasered down the left field line. Oh walked and stole second base in the at bat that followed. Carter scored on a Calvin error and Oh scored when Nahorniak drew a bases loaded walk. The Knights rallied with three runs in top of the third inning to gain the lead and held on for the win.
