Decisive fourth quarter drops Thunder in 56-37 battle against UChicago

Wheaton, Ill. - A fourth quarter run proved to be the decisive blow on Saturday night as the Thunder fell 56-37 to unbeaten University of Chicago at King Arena. Leading by five heading into the final quarter, the Maroons used a 13-0 run to pull away for the comfortable victory for their eighth-straight victory to open the season. The loss drops Wheaton to 5-3 overall ahead of Wheaton's December 10th tip-off against Elmhurst at King Arena.

Wheaton finished the game shooting 27.8% both from the field (15-54) and three-point line (5-18) while make two of their four free throw attempts. Chicago struggled from deep, shooting 3-17 (17.6%) but finished at 38.1% (24-63) from the field. The Maroons dominated the game in the paint, outscoring the Thunder 42-12 and owning a 48-36 rebounding advantage.

Wheaton started the game strong, using a 9-4 run following the first quarter media timeout to take a 15-10 lead before a late Chicago basket cut the lead to 15-12 at the end of the first quarter. An Anna Fernandez three-pointer midway through the second quarter pushed Wheaton's lead back up to 20-16, but that would prove to be Wheaton's final points of the first half as Chicago scored six-straight to finish the quarter and lead 22-20 at intermission.

A five-point spurt early in the third quarter pushed Chicago's lead up to a game-high five points, which held heading into the fourth quarter. Caroline Sikkink scored the first basket of the fourth quarter before the Maroons ran off 13 unanswered points to take control of the game en route to a 56-37 victory.

Anna Fernandez, Kate Oliver, and Ellie Cassel led the Thunder with six points apiece with Cassel grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
