Tacoma, Wash. – The Wheaton women's basketball concluded its weekend trip to the Pacific Northwest to participate in University of Puget Sound's Doug McArthur Classic. Wheaton (4-1) closed out the 2-0 trip with a 62-56 victory against No. 24 Puget Sound (0-1).
Caylee Hermanson led the Thunder with 15 points, on seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Annika Richardson tallied 13 points with seven rebounds.
Ellie Cassel scored nine points with seven rebounds.
Anna Fernandez had eight points with five rebounds and four assists.
Kate Oliver scored six points, with seven rebounds and four assists.
Lily Schwen scored six points with six rebounds and two assists.
The Thunder shot 33.3% (17-of-51) from the field, including 38.1% (8-of-21) from three-point range. Puget Sound was held to a 23.9% (16-of-67) field goal percentage, including 18.5% (5-of-27) behind the three-point arc. The Thunder shot 80% (20-of-25) at the free throw line, while the Loggers posted a 65.5% (19-of-29) effort at the charity stripe. The Loggers held a narrow 48-44 rebounding edge, including a decisive 23-12 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Loggers led 9-7 with 3:26 left in the first quarter when Wheaton responded with a 9-2 scoring spurt to close out the quarter. The Thunder scoring run was highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Fernandez and Richardson. The run helped Wheaton hold a 16-11 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The guests led by as much as 12 points in the second quarter with a 31-19 lead in the final minute before halftime. The Thunder let 31-21 at the halftime intermission. Hermanson and
Caroline Sikkink each scored five points for the Thunder as the duo scored 10 of Wheaton 15 second-quarter points.
The Thunder maintained a double-digit lead at 41-31 with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter when the Loggers scored eight unanswered points to trim Wheaton's lead to 41-39 with 3:27 left in the third. The Thunder led 49-45 at the conclusion of the third quarter. Hermanson scored seven points in the third quarter to lead Wheaton.
Wheaton led 53-47 with 6:50 remaining in the fourth quarter when Oliver drained a three-pointer to give the guests a key nine-point lead at 56-47. After that point the closest the Loggers could get was a five-point deficit as the Thunder earned the 62-56 victory.
The Thunder return home Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Ripon College in King Arena.
