Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Wheaton volleyball team participated in two matches on Saturday at the Cornell Classic. The Thunder opened the day with a 3-0 victory against Coe College (4-4), topping the Kohawks 25-21, 25-21, 25-17. Wheaton closed out the day with its second victory in a 3-1 win against Cornell College (5-3). The Rams defeated Wheaton 25-19 in the first set, however, the Thunder rallied with three-consecutive wins of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-22.
Wheaton is now 4-5 on the season. The Thunder are off until next Friday when it hosts the
Marilyn Scribner Invitational. Wheaton's first match of the tournament is a conference match at 6:00 p.m. against Carroll followed by a matchup against Wisconsin Lutheran at 8:00 p.m.
Wheaton opened Saturday with a 3-0 victory against Coe. Senior
Colleen Smith led the Thunder with 10 kills in the victory against the Kohawks.
Naomi Bunker and
Audrey Gerze each tallied six kills for the Thunder as Bunker posted a .357 attack percentage. Setters
Mia Staub and
Marlee Anderson each recorded 17 assists for Wheaton.
Allie High had a team-high 22 digs, with 15 digs for Smith and 11 by Gerze. Bunker added three total blocks.
Smith led the Thunder with 12 kills in the victory against Cornell. Gerze tallied 10 kills with a team-high 18 digs.
Caroline Capps added seven kills with five total blocks. Anderson had 15 assists and Staub added 12 assists. High recorded four service aces in the match, adding 12 digs. Anderson also recorded 12 digs.
Kaylee Byerly had two solo blocks, with five assisted blocks.
