Rock Island, Illinois - The Wheaton volleyball team (2-4) returned to action on Wednesday night with a matchup at Augustana College. The Vikings (2-6) defeated the Thunder 3-0 in the match. Augustana won the first set 25-15, and followed with a 25-17 victory for the hosts in set two. The Vikings closed out the victory with a 25-22 win in the decisive third set.
Audrey Gerze led the Thunder with nine kills and
Colleen Smith added six kills for the guests.
Marlee Anderson distributed 14 assists and added 11 digs.
Allie High led the Thunder with 25 digs in the match.
Augustana scored the first five points in its 25-15 victory in the first set. The hosts never trailed in the opener.
Wheaton led the second set 4-1 early on. Augustana tied the set at 4-4 and the set remained close as the two squads were tied at 10-10. The Thunder pulled out to a 15-11 advantage, however, Augustana responded with six-consecutive points to take a 17-15 lead against Wheaton. The Vikings never relenquished their lead and held on for the 25-17 victory in the set.
Augustana led 11-4 early in the third set. Wheaton countered with eight-straight points to take a 12-11 lead. The score was tied 18-18 when the Vikings scored four-consecutive points to gain a 22-18 lead. The Thunder cut the Vikings' lead to 24-22, but an Augustana kill gave the hosts the 25-22 victory in the set and the 3-0 win in the match.
Wheaton closes out its season next Friday at 7:00 p.m. when Carthage College visits King Arena.
