Chicago, Ill. - The Wheaton softball team traveled to North Park on Friday afternoon to resume two different games that had been halted when played on their original dates. The first game to resume today resulted in 7-6 victory for the Thunder. North Park defeated the Thunder 5-4 in 11 innings in the second resumed. game.
Today's first game, a 7-6 Wheaton victory,
was started on April 1 at North Park as the second game of a doubleheader. The halted due to weather in the top of the fourth inning with one out, the bases loaded, one out and the score tied at 6-6. When play resumed this afternoon, Wheaton forced the second out on a fielder's choice at home that prevented the go-ahead run from scoring. NPU popped up to the pitcher for the third out of the fourth inning as Wheaton escaped the jam.
Wheaton broke the 6-6 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ashley Carter led off the sixth with a single to left centerfield and three batters later
Claire Busch hit a two-out single that advanced Carter to second base.
Melissa Meiners' RBI-single to leftfield brought Carter home to give Wheaton the 7-6 lead.
Alese Antonello induced three North Park outs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the 7-6 victory for the Thunder.
Today's second resumed game, a 5-4 North Park victory,
began on April 12 as the second game of a doubleheader at Wheaton's Ruth Leedy Field. The game two was tied 4-4 when it was halted at the conclusion of the seventh inning due to darkness.
Play resumed today in Chicago in the top of the eighth inning. Neither team collected a hit in their respective portion of the eighth inning. Wheaton had zero hits in the ninth, while the Vikings had one hit and stranded two runners in the inning. Wheaton 's
Janette Oh and
Sarah Major each collected a single in the top of the tenth, but Oh was stranded at third base when the inning ended. The Vikings were hitless in the bottom of the tenth.
Carter led off the top of the 11th inning for the Thunder, but Wheaton was unable to score in the inning. North Park's Alyssa Aragon reached on an error in the bottom of the 11th inning and she scored the winning run on a RBI-single in the next at bat.
Wheaton is now 14-20 on the season and 11-17 in CCIW play. The Thunder conclude the regular season tomorrow in a CCIW doubleheader at Augustana.
