Baseball drops a pair to Millikin

Carol Stream, Ill. - The Thunder baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Lee Pfund Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Wheaton could not hold onto an early lead in a 9-6 game one loss before dropping game two 28-5 in seven innings. Wheaton has now dropped seven-straight games and falls to 3-7 in conference action and 5-11 overall. Millikin improves to 16-3 overall and 9-2 in the CCIW. Wheaton will be in action again on Tuesday when the Thunder travel to North Park for a 3 pm first pitch.

Wheaton jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings in game one, taking advantage of a Millikin error to set up Mason Packwood's RBI single. Wheaton would plate runs on a fielder's choice off the bat of Matthias Haggerty and a wild pitch before Graham Core stroked an RBI single and Ben Weaver followed with a ringing double to plate Core with the fifth run of the inning.

Millikin pulled within one run in the top of the fifth inning with a three-run inning and tied the game when two Thunder errors led to a Big Blue run in the top of the seventh inning leaving Jacob Garrity with a no decision after the Thunder starter struck out 10 batters and allowed four runs on six hits over six innings of work.

A two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning pushed Millikin back in front at 7-5, but Wheaton cut into the deficit when Sam Reichert scored on Packwood's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. The Big Blue added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth to secure the 9-6 victory. Reichert had three hits and scored twice to lead the Thunder offense. Mason Packwood drove in a pair of runs with a two-hit performance.

Millikin carried the game one momentum into the second game, taking advantage of three Thunder defense miscues in the top of the first inning to plate 11 runs on just five hits. The offensive output would not slow down for the visitors as they added three runs in the top of the second and third innings en route to a lopsided 28-5 victory.

Wheaton's offense was highlighted by a home run by Matthias Haggerty to lead off the bottom of the first inning. The Thunder added three runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Jesse Welch before a Millikin error allowed Packwood to score the second run. Noah Ritchie followed with a bases loaded to walk for the third run of the inning. Tyler Weiner drove home a run in the bottom of the third with a bases loaded fielder's choice to score Harrison Stanton.
