Bloomington, Ill. - A late rally by Illinois Wesleyan lifted the host Titans to a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday afternoon, dropping Wheaton to 6-16 on the season and 4-12 in the CCIW. Wheaton dropped game one by a score of 8-2 in seven innings before falling victim to a walkoff 11-10 win for the Titans in game two. Wheaton will return to Lee Pfund Stadium for its final nonconference games of the season on Saturday with a 1 pm doubleheader.
Wheaton wasted no time in game one, taking an early lead just four batters in to the game when
Noah Ritchie singled home
Matthias Haggerty. Wheaton threatened further damage in the inning, but left the bases loaded with only the one run home. Illinois Wesleyan took advantage of the momentum to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the bottom of the second and opened the game up with three runs in the bottom of the third. Trailing 7-1 entering the top of the fifth inning,
Cale Lewis led off with a double and came around to score on a Haggerty groundout. The Titans answered with a final run in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the 8-2 victory.
Wheaton's two runs came on seven hits with no errors while the Titans connected on 14 hits to score eight runs with one error.
Noah Ritchie led the Thunder with two hits in the game.
The Thunder bounced back to score first again in game two when
Graham Core reached on an error and later came in to score on another error following his steal of third base. Similar to game one, the Titans came back in the bottom of the first inning, tying the game at 1-1 before taking a 6-1 lead with four runs in the second and another in the third inning.
Jesse Welch singled and scored on
Clayton Moore's single in the top of the fourth and
Ben Weaver did the same on a
Joel Pierce single in the top of the fifth to pull the Thunder to within 6-3 entering the sixth inning. Wheaton loaded the bases to start the inning when Core singled up the middle for the first hit of the inning. Weaver followed with a three-run double to give Wheaton the lead back at 7-6.
Mason Packwood later drove in Weaver with a sacrifice fly and Moore tallied another RBI single to put Wheaton ahead 9-6.
A Titan run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the bottom of the seventh tied the game again at nine apiece, but
Alex Hanvey sidestepped further harm by escaping a bases loaded jam to end the inning. Wheaton retook the lead in the top of the eighth inning when a two-out single by
Joel Pierce led to pinch runner
Luke Roudabush coming around to score on another RBI single by Moore, putting Wheaton ahead 10-9.
Caleb Vankerkhoff stranded two runners in a scoreless eighth inning of work but could not do the same in the ninth as the Titans scored twice, bringing the game to a close with a one-out sacrifice fly for the 11-10 victory and the doubleheader sweep.
Both
Ben Weaver and
Clayton Moore drove in three runs with the duo joining
Joel Pierce in collecting three-hit efforts in game two.
Graham Core walked and scored twice while stealing two bases for his team-leading 14th steal of the season.
