Aurora tops the Thunder softball team in a pair of games at home

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton softball team (1-3) hosted Aurora University (8-0) on Friday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader. The Spartans shut out the Thunder 10-0 in a five-inning contest in the first game of the twinbill. Aurora closed out the sweep of the pair with a 7-3 victory in the second game.

Aurora won the first game 10-0 as the guests scored 10 runs, on 11 hits, with no errors and Wheaton tallied no runs, on two hits with two errors. Aurora scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and added six in the top of the third to account for the guests 10 runs in the game.

Thunder starting pitcher Alese Antonello (0-1) worked 2-1/3 innings as she allowed nine runs, including four earned runs on eight hits. Elise O'Neil worked 2-2/3 innings of relief with one run, no earned runs, on three hits, four strikeouts and one walk. Emilie Gist hit a double for the Thunder and a Claire Busch single accounted for Wheaton's two hits in the game.

The Spartans earned the sweep with a 7-3 victory in the second game. Aurora tallied seven runs, on 14 hits, with no errors and Wheaton plated three runs, on 10 hits, with two errors. Gist the Thunder starting pitcher, tossed all seven innings for the hosts. She allowed seven runs, including five earned runs, on 14 hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.

Emilie GistThunder shortstop Ashley Carter was 4-for-4 at the plate in the nightcap, hitting a double for the hosts. Gist (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Meiners hit a double and two RBI in the game.

Aurora took an early 1-0 lead with one run in the top of the first inning. Meiners hit a two-run double to right centerfield in the bottom of the first inning to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. The Spartans added a run in the top of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The guests added three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Alex Hilton hit a RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth inning to trim the Spartans' lead to 5-3. Aurora added two runs in the top of the fifth inning to account for the 7-3 lead that would result in the final score.

Wheaton travels to University of Chicago on Monday, March 22 for a doubleheader against the Maroons that is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
