Carol Stream, Ill. - The Thunder baseball dropped its fourth-straight game on Saturday morning with an 11-2 loss to the University of Chicago. Chicago's offense rolled to the tune of 13 hits while limiting Wheaton to just four hits in dropping the Thunder to 1-4 on the young season. UChicago is now 1-1 on the season. Wheaton will wrap up its weekend on Saturday evening with a 5 pm start time against Calvin University.
Noah Ritchie put Wheaton on the board first with a leadoff single in the bottom of the second inning and quickly moved up to second base on a balk. Two batters later, the senior infielder stole third base setting up a sacrifice fly by
Jesse Welch. Chicago answered quickly, loading the bases with no outs in the next half inning leading to three Maroon runs and a 3-1 Chicago lead.
Graham Core and Ritchie set the Thunder up for an answer in the bottom of the fourth inning when Core led off for a single and stole second base before Ritchie was hit by a pitch.
Mason Packwood followed with a double to score Core and move Ritchie to third, but the Thunder could not capitalize further, stranding runners on second and third after the next three hitters were retired.
Once again, Chicago answered immediately, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by a pair of triples to stretch its lead to 6-2. After the Thunder left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Maroons put the game away with five runs over the final three innings for the 11-2 victory.
