Elkhorn, Wis. - The Wheaton women's tennis team faced Carroll University (2-1, 0-1 CCIW) on the road Friday afternoon to open conference play. The Thunder topped the Pioneers 8-1 in the match. Wheaton is now 1-1 on the season, with a 1-0 CCIW record.
Wheaton held a 2-1 lead following the three doubles matches that opened the competition. The Thunder No. 2 doubles team of
Claire Dibble and
Bethany Hoogerheide earned an 8-2 victory against Carroll's tandem of Carolyn Merkatoris and Maya Gaedtke.
Caroline Park and
Lindsey Anderson defeated Carroll's Rachel Papp and Francesca Grimes 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
The Thunder won all six singles matches against the Pioneers.
Emme Lindquist rallied for a 3-6, 7-6, 7-4, 11-9 victory at No. 1 singles against Grace Krueger.
Abygale Ahn was a 6-0, 6-2 victor at No. 2 singles against Carroll's Madison Ostrander. Dibble picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 single against Gaedtke; and Hoogerheide defeated Lora Leach 6-1, 6-0 in their matchup at No. 4 singles.
Sarah Backer defeated Markatoris in their matchup at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-0. Park was a 6-0, 6-1 victor at No. 6 singles against Papp.
Wheaton returns to action on March 18 at Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park, Illinois with a match against NCAA Division II opponent Lewis University. The match with the Flyers is slated to begin at 12:45 p.m.
