Thunder wrestling competes at the MSOE Invite

Milwaukee, Wis. - The Wheaton wrestling team returned to action on Saturday at the MSOE Invitational. The Thunder grapplers placed 10th in the 17-team field.

Augsburg won the event with 149.5 points, followed by UW-Eau Claire in second place with 127 points. Cornell (Iowa) finished third with 110 points, Central (Iowa) scored 82 points in fourth place, University of Chicago rounded out the top-five with 80 points. UW-Platteville finished sixth with 79 points, UW-Oshkosh was seventh with 63 points, UW-Whitewater placed eighth with 59 points, Triton College scored 45 points in ninth place and Wheaton rounded out the top-10 with 40.5 points.

Ethan Harsted finished second in the 133-pound weight class. Harsted received a first-round bye and defeated UW-Whitewater's Matt McEnroe in a 17-1 technical fall in the second round. Harsted defeated Augsburg's Kieler Carlson in an 8-4 decision in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Harsted won a 5-3 decision against Elon Rodriguez of Triton. Javon Taschuck won an 11-9 decision against Harsted in the finals at 133-pounds.

Brendan Johnston placed fifth at 125-pounds. Johnston opened with a 19-2 technical fall against Cornell's Nathan Bednarczyk. Jack Marley of UW-Eau Claire defeated Johnston in a 10-3 decision in the second round. Johnston won a 16-0 technical fall against Lakeland's Tristan Supernaw in the consolation bracket. He defeated Alex Barbarise of UW-Whitewater and lost to UW-Whitewater's Tyler Klein in an 11-1 major decision. Johnston won an 8-6 decision against Nolan McKittrick of UW-Platteville in the fifth-place match. 

Jackson Punzel won his first two matches in the 197-pound weight class. Punzel opened with a fall just 1:41 into his first round match against Albion's Boden Brown. Punzel won a 16-7 major decision against Central's Miles Berg in the second round. Punzel lost an 11-0 major decision in the quarterfinals against Augsburg's Bentley Schwanebeck.
