11th-ranked Thunder women's basketball defeats Dominican 84-52 to improve to 7-0

Wheaton, Ill. - The 11th-ranked Thunder women's basketball team improved to 7-0 with a victory at home against Dominican University on Tuesday night. Wheaton used a strong second half to earn an 84-52 victory against the Stars (1-3) tonight.

Thunder senior Hannah Swider led Wheaton with 21 points tonight, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Swider shot 7-of-9 from the field tonight, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. Annie Tate tallied a "double-double" with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Zoe Nordling scored nine points off the Thunder bench. Caroline Sikkink and Ellie Cassel each scored eight points, with nine rebounds for Cassel. 

Wheaton shot 51.6% (32-for-62) from the field tonight, including 66.5% (19-of-29) in the second half. The hosts shot 50% (4-for-8) from three-point range tonight. Dominican posted a 31.6% (18-of-57) field goal percentage, including 20.7% (6-of-29) behind the three-point arc. Wheaton shot 64% (16-of-25) at the free throw line tonight, and the Stars had a 76.9% (10-of-13) effort at the charity stripe. Wheaton dominated the Stars on the glass tonight as the hosts out-rebounded Dominican 52-22, including an 18-7 edge on the offensive glass.

The first quarter was a slugfest as the Thunder led 10-9 at the end of the opening quarter. Dominican's Alisha Markley made an 'old-fashioned' three-point play to give the Stars a 23-21 lead with 4:12 remaining in the second quarter. Caroline Sikkink made a layup at 3:45 to start a 14-3 Thunder run to close out the second quarter. The key run allowed the Thunder to hold a 35-26 lead at halftime. Tate scored 10 of Wheaton's 14 points in the run, and Sikkink scored four. Tate shot 6-of-10 from the field in the first half, scoring a game-high 14 points in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Wheaton scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take a 45-26 lead with 5:24 remaining in the quarter. Wheaton out-scored Dominican 23-13 in the third quarter as the hosts led 58-39 at the conclusion of the quarter.

Swider scored nine points in the fourth quarter, helping the hosts to a 26-13 scoring edge in the final quarter. Wheaton out-scored the Stars 49-26 in the impressive second half of action.

Wheaton's next game is a conference matchup on December 1 at Carthage College. The matchup against the Firebirds tips off at 5:00 p.m.
