Chicago, Ill. - The sixth-ranked Wheaton Thunder men's basketball team earned a road win at University of Chicago (3-2) on Tuesday night. The Thunder topped the Maroons 77-67, as Wheaton improves to 5-0 on the season.
Thunder guard
Tyson Cruickshank led Wheaton in scoring tonight with 21 points. He shot 7-of-10 from the field, making two three points and he distributed four assists. Senior forward
Cade Alioth registered his fourth "double-double" of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Alioth shot 7-of-11 from the field.
Nyameye Adom scored 16 points, with four assists and two blocked shots.
Eli Considine contributed seven points with nine rebounds.
Eddie Scott scored six points and
Nick Schiavello added five points with four rebounds.
The Thunder shot 52.% (26-of-50) from the field, including 31.8% (7-for-22) behind the three-point arc tonight. The Maroons recorded a 42.9% (27-of-63) field goal percentage, including 22.7% (5-of-22) from three-point range. The Thunder out-rebounded the hosts 31-21, with a 10-6 edge on the offensive glass for UChicago.
Brandon Beckman led UChicago with 15 points tonight. Bryce Hopkins and Zach Munson each scored 14 points for the hosts, with Elliot Paschal adding 10 points. Hopkins had a team-high seven rebounds for the Maroons.
Wheaton held a one-point lead at 15-14 with 12:14 remaining in the first half when Adom drained a three-pointer that started a 10-4 run for the Thunder to increase the Wheaton lead to 25-18 with 8:00 left in the first half. The Maroons scored six unanswered points to cut Wheaton's lead to one point at 25-24 with 6:00 left in the first half. The Thunder led 27-26 with 3:40 remaining in the first half when Cruickshank made a three-pointer that sparked a 12-5 Thunder run to close out the first half. Cruickshank scored 10 of Wheaton's 12 points in the run as the Thunder let 39-31 at the halftime intermission.
The Thunder led by six points at 43-37 with 16:00 left in the second half when Eli Consindine made a layup that started a string of nine unanswered points for Wheaton. The run culminated with a three-pointer for
Nate Sock. The Thunder maintained a double-digit lead for much of the remainder of the game.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday as the Thunder host Ripon College at 4:00 p.m. in King Arena.
