Mequon, Wis. – The Wheaton Thunder wrestling team competed at the 2021 Concordia (Wis.) Open on Saturday. The event featured 20 teams.
Anthony Zamora and
Jackson Punzel each finished third in their respective weight classes today for the Thunder.
Zamora placed this in the 125-pound weight class. He opened by winning a 16-0 technical fall against Gabe Ragsdale of Bryant & Stratton College. Zamora followed the up with a 22-3 technical fall against Manchester's Justin Brantley, and a 5-2 decision over Adrian Rosas of Wartburg. Loras' Jared Hensley edged Zamora in a 3-1 decision in the semifinal. Zamora earned a fall at 1:48 against Aidan Haggard of Wartburg in the consolation bracket. Zamora defeated Dubuque's Cade Hornbeck in a 7-2 decision in the third-place match.
Punzel finished third in the 197-pound weight class. He opened with a fall over Loras' Abe Michel at 2:48. Punzel won a 7-4 decision against Harper College's Demarco Lee and he followed that with a 5-2 decision over North Central's Cody Baldridge. Chad Richards of UW-Whitewater defeated Punzel in the semifinal at 197-pounds. Punzel defeated Michael Dooley of Stevens Tech in the consolation bracket. Punzel closed out the tournament with a 6-4 decision of Loras' Tad Griffith in the third-place match.
Natan Jara placed fourth at 184-pounds. He opened with a fall at 5:44 in his first-round match against Bryant & Stratton's Jarvis Echols. Jara earned another fall in the second round, at the 5:00 mark of his match against Wabash's Trescott Duffy. UChicago's Maguire Pecci earned a fall at 2:57 of his match against Jara. Jara followed that with a 10-2 decision over Harper's Ethan Shedlbecker, and then won a 3-2 decision over Wabash's Charles Baczek. Pecci defeated Jara in a 1-0 decision in the third-place match.
The Thunder wrestling team returns to Wisconsin for its next competition. Wheaton will compete at the MSOE Invitational on December 4.
