Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's soccer team remains undefeated in CCIW play following a 2-0 victory against Elmhurst University (4-8-1, 1-5-1 CCIW) at home on Saturday afternoon. The Thunder program honored its seniors at halftime of today's match for its "Senior Day" activities.
Wheaton is now 8-6-2 overall with an unblemished 6-0-0 record in conference play. Wheaton hosts North Central (9-5-1, 4-1-0 CCIW) on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a key conference match with CCIW Tournament implications.
Wheaton controlled the pace of the match in the first half, with a 19-6 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes. However, Wheaton's first goal of the first half came late. Wheaton was attacking the goal when a Thunder player was fouled in the penalty area and Wheaton was awarded a penalty kick.
Audrey Sexson took the penalty kick and converted it to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead 43:44 into the contest. Wheaton held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal in the first half.
Wheaton tallied its second goal early in the second half. Senior
Grace Hermanson collected a deflected shot and put it into the lower right corner of the net on a shot from about 10 yards out. Hermanson's goal at the 58:36 mark of the match gave Wheaton the 2-0 lead that would be the final result. Wheaton out-shot the Bluejays 12-6 in the second half, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
Wheaton's senior goalkeeper
Lauren Ketchum made 10 saves in net in recording the shutout. Elmhurst goalkeeper MaKenzee Velcheck recorded 14 saves and she allowed two goals in 90 minutes of work.
Wheaton out-shot the Bluejays 31-12 in the match, with a 16-10 edge for the Thunder in shots on goal. The Thunder had four corner kicks in the match, Elmhurst was awarded one corner kick.
