Hanover Park, Ill. - The Wheaton women's tennis team (10-2) advanced to Saturday's final at the 2021 CCIW Women's Tennis Championship with a victory in the tournament's semifinal round on Friday afternoon. Third seed Wheaton avenged one of its two losses in the fall regular season in Friday's semifinal with a 5-1 victory against No. 2 seed Millikin (10-2).
Wheaton now advances to face No. 1 seed North Central on Saturday at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park. The Cardinals defeated Augustana 5-0 in Friday's first semifinal match.
Wheaton won two of the three doubles matches in today's matchup against Millikin. The Thunder No. 2 doubles team of
Bethany Hoogerheide and
Lydia Adams earned an 8-5 victory against the Millikin tandem of Chloe Sabin and Nikol Obradovic.
Sarah Backer and
Lily Anne Van Ye defeated the Millikin team of Shelby Jones and Destiny Galvan 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Bethany Hoogerheide defeated Millikin's Brianna Barconi 6-2, 6-0 in their match at No. 3 singles.
Alexandra Wachs was victorious in her match at No. 5 singles against Sabin. Wachs won the first set 6-4 and Sabin retired from the match when she suffered an injury and was unable to continue. At No. 5 singles,
Lydia Adams rallied to secure Wheaton's fifth point in the match. Millikin's Cristina Borunda defeated Adams 6-1 in the opening set and Adams rallied with a 6-0 victory in the second set. Adams scured the win with a 6-1 win the third set.
