Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton volleyball team remains undefeated in CCIW play with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-15) sweep of Augustana College (5-18, 0-5 CCIW). Wheaton is now 13-8 overall and 5-0 in CCIW play. The Thunder stand alone atop the CCIW standings at 5-0.
Senior
Colleen Smith again led the Thunder in kills with 12. Smith did not record an error in her 29 attempts as she posted a .414 attack percentage. Freshman
Ashton Major tallied 6 kills, while
Briley Brogan and
Caroline Capps each recorded five kills. Setter
Marlee Anderson led the Thunder with 17 assists and she had a team-high four service aces. Libero
Allie High led the Thunder with 15 digs.
Naomi Bunker had four total blocks, including two solos.
Wheaton won the first set 25-18, never trailing in the set. Wheaton's first two points of the opening set came on kills by Smith as the Thunder jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Smith had four kills in the set and Major tallied three. Anderson had seven of Wheaton's eight assists in the set, and High registered dix digs.
The Thunder earned a commanding 25-11 victory in the second set. Wheaton never trailed in a set that was tied on three occasions. The final tie of the set was at 4-4 when the hosts scored nine-consecutive points to take a 13-4 lead. Wheaton's 9-0 run included three kills by Smith. Smith was sensational in the set with six kills, and attaking errors on 12 attempts for a .500 attack percentage.
Mia Staub had seven assists in set, and High added five digs.
Wheaton closed out the match with a 25-15 victory in the second set. The Vikings jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the set, but Wheaton battled back to tie the set at 8-8. The set was tied 10-10 when a kill by Smith was the start of four-consecutive points to give the hosts a 14-10 lead. Wheaton never trailed following the run. Capps and Brogan led the Thunder with three kills apiece in the set. Anderson recorded seven assists in the set.
Wheaton remains in conference history on Friday with a match at Elmhurst. Friday's match against the Bluejays is slated to bebing at 7:00 p.m.
