Women's basketball takes its first loss as Millikin tops the Thunder 85-60

Decatur, Ill. - The Wheaton women's basketball team traveled to Millikin University on Saturday afternoon for the second-consecutive matchup with the Big Blue. Millikin (2-1) handed Wheaton (2-1) its first loss of the season as the hosts topped the Thunder 85-60.

Senior Hannah Williams led the Thunder with 17 points, making a trio of three-pointers, and she added six rebounds. Annie Tate tallied 10 points, with five rebounds. Hannah Swider had nine points, with seven rebounds and two assists. Bonnie Zeller and Taylor Sanders each scored seven points for the guests. Ellie Cassel grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Thunder.

Wheaton posted a 38.3 %(18-of-47) field goal percentage today, including 29.4% (5-of-17) from three-point range. Millikin shot 39.5% (30-of-76) from the field, including 36.4% (8-of-22) from behind the three-point arc. The Thunder shot 63.3% (19-for-30) at the free throw line and the Big Blue had a 77.3% (17-of-22) effort at the charity stripe. Millikin out-rebounded the Thunder 43-41, including a 15-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Millikin led by one point at 12-11 with 3:06 left in the first quarter when the hosts put together an 8-2 run to close out the quarter as the Big Blue led 20-13 at the end of the first. Millikin controlled the second quarter, out-scoring the Thuder 21-8 in the period as the Big Blue led 41-21 at halftime. The hosts continued to lead by double digits in the second half. Millikin's largest lead of the game was a 30-point bulge at 85-55 with 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Elyce Knudsen led Millikin with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Bailey Coffman scored 16 points with five rebounds. Aubrey Staton scored 15 points and Jordan Hildebrand grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Wheaton returns to action on Thursday night in a 7:00 p.m. tipoff at Elmhurst University.
