Women's basketball falls to Illinois Wesleyan, 84-76 in the CCIW Tournament Championship Game

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's basketball team lost to Illinois Wesleyan University, 84-76 on Saturday night in the CCIW Women's Basketball Tournament Championship Game. The No. 1 seed Thunder are now 20-7 on the season. Illinois Wesleyan (19-8) earns the CCIW's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. Wheaton is a candidate for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament when pairings are announced Monday at 1:30 p.m. (CST) at www.ncaa.com.

Hannah FrazierSenior Hannah Frazier (PICTURED LEFT) led the Thunder with 22 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and two assists. Fellow senior Jill Berg scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Hannah Williams scored 12 points with four rebounds and five assists. Kristi Demski scored nine points, making three three-pointers. Kirsten Madsen scored seven points with four assists.

Wheaton shot 47.5% (29-of-61) from the field, including 27.6% (8-of-29) from three-point range. The Titans posted a 40.3% (29-of-72) field goal percentage, with a stellar 47.8% (11-of-23) behind the three-point arc. The Thunder shot 76.9% (10-of-13) at the free throw line and the Titans had a 78.9% (15-of-19) effort at the charity stripe. The Titans out-rebounded Wheaton 44-32, including an 18-7 edge on the offensive glass. Illinois Wesleyan's edge on the offensive glass helped the Titans to a 25-8 edge in second-chance points.

The Titans came out strong tonight, leading the Thunder 15-2 with 6:00 remaining in the first quarter. Jordan Myroth made a basket for the Thunder with  5:55 remaining in the quarter to spark a string of 15-consecutive points for the Thunder. Six different Thunder players scored in the 15-0 run for the hosts as Wheaton gained its first lead at 17-15 with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter. The Titans led 25-21 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Wheaton opened the second quarter with a basket by Berg and a three-pointer by Demski to give the hosts a 26-25 lead with 8:23 remaining in the first half. The guests led 32-30 with 6:38 remaining in the second quarter when the Titans put together an 8-2 run to take an eight-point lead at 40-32 with 3:47 remaining in the first half. Wheaton battled back to trim the Titans' lead to three points at halftime as IWU led 44-41 at the halftime intermission.

The Titans pulled away in the third quarter out-scoring Wheaton 23-13 in the period. Illinois Wesleyan led by 13 points at 67-54 at the end of the third quarter.

IWU opened the fourth quarter with a 6-1 run to take its largest lead of the game at 18 points with a 73-55 advantage with 6:47 remaining in the game. The Thunder battled back with a 14-4 run over a span of 4:44 to cut the Titans' lead to eight points at 77-69 with 1:55 left in the game. The Thunder never got closer than eight points in the final minute of the game as the Titans hung on for the 84-76 victory.

Kendall Sosa led the Titans with 31 points and four steals and Samantha Munroe scored 26 points for the guests. Sydney Shanks scored 14 points with six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Riley Brovelli grabbed nine rebounds with three assists and Brooke Lansford distributed seven assists.
