Waukesha, Wis. - The Thunder men's basketball team dropped a road matchup at Carroll University (11-11, 4-9 CCIW) on Wednesday as the Pioneers defeated the Thunder 74-61. Wheaton is now 13-9 on the season with a 7-6 record in CCIW action.
Cade Alioth led the Thunder with 17 points tonight, shooting 87.5% (7-of-8) from the field. Alioth grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the matchup.
Luke Anthony scored 15 points tonight, making four three-pointers.
Tyson Cruickshank scored seven points, while
Anajuwon Spencer and
Nyameye Adom each contributed six points. Adom distributed a game-high six assists and Spencer grabbed six rebounds with a game-high four blocked shots.
Wheaton shot 55% (22-of-40) from the field tonight, including 38.9% (7-of-18) from three-point range. The Pioneers posted a 44.1% (26-of-59) field goal percentage , including 45.8% (11-of-24) behind the three-point arc. Wheaton shot 62.5% (10-of-16) at the free throw line and Carroll had a 73.3% (11-of-15) effort at the charity stripe. The Thunder out-rebounded the hosts 27-22 tonight with a 6-3 edge on the offensive glass for the Pioneers. Wheaton's 19 turnovers tonight proved costly as Carroll out-scored the Thunder 22-6 off of turnovers.
The first half was tightly contested as the largest lead in the first 20 minutes was a four-point lead for the Thunder at 28-24 with 2:21 remaining before halftime. Carroll led 31-28 with 10-seconds remaining in the first half when Spencer drained a three-pointer for the Thunder to tie the game at 31-31. However, Carroll's Nick Penny made a trey as time expired to give the hosts a 34-31 lead at the halftime intermission. Alioth scored nine points in the first half to lead the Thunder, while Penny had 14 points for Carroll.
Anthony made a three-pointer for the Thunder with 17:33 remaining in the second half as Carroll led 40-39. Penny responded with a basket about a minute and 20 seconds later to spark a 12-2 scoring run for the Pioneers as Carroll extended its lead to 52-41 with nine minutes left in the game. The Pioneers continued to hold a double digit lead for the majority of the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Penny led Carroll with 27 points, making six three-pointers. Kale Maupin registered 21 points with five steals. Ryan Clarey scored 10 points, while Charlie Soule led the Pioneers with seven rebounds.
Wheaton hosts Illinois Wesleyan Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in King Arena in a key CCIW matchup against the Titans.
