Wheaton, Ill. - Playing its second game in three nights, the Thunder women's basketball team ran out of gas late in a 73-64 loss to Carroll University on Wednesday night. Leading after three quarters, the Pioneers outscored Wheaton 31-20 in the final ten minutes to earn the victory. The loss drops Wheaton to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW while Carroll improves to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Wheaton will wrap up its three-game home stand on Saturday night with a 5 pm tip-off at King Arena against Elmhurst College.
Carroll shot 38.2% (21-55) and made 33.3% (9-27) of its three-point attempts. The Pioneers made 22-of-30 free throw attempts and held a 41-29 rebounding advantage including a 14-8 advantage in offensive boards. Wheaton finished the game shooting 41.1% (23-56) and 37% (10-27) from the three-point line while making eight-of-10 free throw attempts.
After a sloppy opening quarter,
Hannah Frazier staked Wheaton to a lead at the end of the first quarter with five consecutive points to give the Thunder a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. A three-pointer by
Hannah Williams pushed Wheaton's lead to 23-17 before the Pioneers scored ran off seven straight points before a
Kirsten Madsen three-pointer gave Wheaton a 26-24 lead. With the lead bouncing back and forth, Carroll answered a Williams lay-up to cut the Thunder halftime to 32-31.
Wheaton was held scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half as the Pioneers built a 36-32 lead until Frazier finally broke the run with a jumper.
Hannah Swider followed with a three-pointer to score the first three of her 10 third quarter points to push Wheaton back in front with a 44-42 lead at the end of the third quarter. Carroll scored the first five points of the final quarter but
Kirsten Madsen tied the score at 47 with a three-pointer.
The Pioneers responded with a 9-2 run to take a 56-49 lead on Brooke Foster's three-pointer. Carroll pushed the lead to as many as 10 points at 63-53 before the Thunder embarked on a 7-2 run to pull within five in the final minutes before the Pioneers iced the game at the free throw line.
Hannah Williams led four Thunder in double figures with 16 points to go with six rebounds and a career-high six assists.
Kirsten Madsen scored 14 points,
Hannah Frazier finished with 13 points and
Hannah Swider had 12 points.
Jill Berg finished the game with seven points and eight rebounds.
