Volleyball earns wins against Lake Forest and MSOE to close out weekend in Milwaukee

Milwaukee, Wis. - The Wheaton volleyball team (6-1) closed out its participation in this weekend's MSOE Invitational with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon. The Thunder opened up their action on Saturday with a 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 15-25, 25-21, 15-5) victory against Lake Forest College (4-4). Wheaton topped the host Raiders 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-14) of MSOE (2-5) in the final match of the day for the 'Orange and Blue'. Wheaton improves to 6-1 on the season with its three victories this weekend.

Wheaton rallied to defeat Lake Forest 3-2 by winning the final two sets. The Thunder won the first set 25-21 and the Forresters won the second set 25-18 and the third set 25-15. Wheaton sent the match to a decisive fifth set with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set. The Thunder dominated Lake Forest in the fifth set with a 15-5 victory. Deborah Smith tallied 11 kills and sophomore Colleen Smith added 10 kills with 16 digs. Ellie Brown registered eight kills, with four total blocks and three service aces. Emma Sweatman added three aces for the Thunder. Allie High and Audrey Gerze each had 17 digs for Wheaton.

Wheaton cruised to the weekend sweep with the 3-0 victory against MSOE in the finale. Wheaton won the first set 25-22, and picked up a 25-20 victory in the second set. The Thunder closed out the win with a 25-14 victory in the third set. Colleen Smith had a team-high nine kills against the Raiders, with seven service aces. Ellie Brown had eight kills, posting a .500 attack percentage with just one error on 14 attempts. Alecia Funk led the Thunder with 19 assists and Marlee Anderson added 14 assists.

Wheaton is off until next weekend when the Thunder hosts the inaugural Marilyn Scribner Invitational. The Thunder entertain North Central and St. Mary's (Ind.) on Friday and Wheaton takes on Dominican Saturday. Friday's match between the Thunder and North Central at 4:00 p.m. will be the CCIW opener for both teams.
