Bloomington, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team traveled to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday for a CCIW doubleheader against the fourth-ranked Titans. IWU (15-4, 2-0 CCIW) won the opener 7-1 and the Titans closed out the sweep with an 8-2 victory in the second game. Wheaton (11-13, 2-2 CCIW) travels to North Park on Tuesday for a twinbill against the Vikings.
Illinois Wesleyan won the opener 7-1 as the Titans scored seven runs, on eight hits with no errors and Wheaton scored one run, on two hits, with two errors. Starting pitcher
Ashley Carter took the loss for the Thunder in 3-2/3 innings of work. Carter allowed seven runs, including five earned runs, on six hits, with three walks and zero strikeouts.
Maddy Whitmer pitched 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief as she scattered two hits. Singles by
Morgan Ryan and Clark accounted for Wheaton's two hits in the game.
The Titans scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Maddie Craver drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Titans scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead that would later become the final score.
The Titans accomplished the sweep with an 8-2 victory in the second game. IWU scored eight runs, on 13 hits, with two errors and Wheaton tallied two runs, on five hits, with zero errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Kelly Thornton allowed seven runs in three innings as she scattered nine hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.
Janette Oh worked four innings of relief as she allowed one run, on four hits.
Claire Busch was 2-for-4 at the plate, with one run. Thornton, Ryan and
Hannah Clark each added a hit for the guests.
The Titans scored one run in the top of the second inning and the hosts added six runs in the top of the third inning to take a 7-0 lead on the Thunder. Thornton drove in a run with a RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth and Carter drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim the IWU lead to 7-2. Illinois Wesleyan added a run in the top of the seventh inning to account for the 8-2 final score.
