Millikin stuns the No. 21 ranked Wheaton women's basketball team 66-63 in overtime

Decatur, Ill. - The Wheaton women's basketball team competed at Millikin University on Saturday in the first road CCIW game of the 2019-20 schedule for the Thunder. Millikin (7-1, 1-0 CCIW) earned a 66-63 victory against the No. 21 ranked Thunder in overtime. Wheaton falls to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in CCIW play.

Hannah Williams led the Thunder with 17 points, making two three-pointers, with three assists. Hannah Frazier scored 13 points, with six rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Kirsten Madsen tallied 10 points with four rebounds. Kristi Demski scored nine points, making a pair of three-pointers.

Wheaton shot 32.3% (20-of-62) from the field, including 29.2% (7-of-24) from three-point range. The Big Blue posted a 36.9% (24-of-65) field goal percentage, including an 18.8% (3-for-16) behind the three-point arc. Wheaton shot 66.7% (16-of-24) at the free throw line and the Big Blue had a 78.9% (15-of-19) effort at the charity stripe. Millikin out-rebounded the Thunder 50-40, including a 14-10 edge on the offensive glass for the hosts. 

Jordan Hildebrand led Millikin with 18 points and 10 rebounds to register a "double-double". Bailey Coffman scored 12 points with six rebounds. Abby Ratsch scored 11 points with 15 rebounds and Aubrey Staton tallied 10 points.

Wheaton held a three-point lead a 21-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Thunder out-scored the Big Blue, 13-8 in the second quarter. Wheaton's largest lead of the game was a 10-point advantage that occurred twice in the second quarter. The final 10-point bulge for the guests was a 32-22 Wheaton lead with 3:28 remaining in the first half. The Thunder led 34-26 at the halftime intermission.

Millikin dominated play in the third quarter as the hosts out-scored Wheaton 16-4. The strong quarter allowed the Big Blue to hold a 42-38 lead at the conclusion of the third quarter.

The Big Blue scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter to give the hosts a six-point lead a 44-38, their largest lead of the game. Wheaton then responded with nine-consecutive points capped by a basket for Frazier to give the Thunder a 47-44 lead with 3:39 remaining in the game. Millikin's Briana Anthony made a field goal with 59-seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 50-50. Wheaton's Bonnie Zeller made one of two free throw attempts to give the guests a 51-50 lead with 40-seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Staton responded on Millikin's next possession with a field goal that gave the hosts a one-point lead at 52-51 with 29-seconds left in the fourth quarter. Coffman made two free throws with nine seconds left to increase the Millikin lead to 54-51. Williams was fouled and made one of two free throw attempts with seven seconds left in the fourth quarter to trim the hosts' lead to 54-52. Frazier collected the offensive rebound following the missed free throw one Williams' second attempt and Frazier was fouled. The Thunder All-American made both free throws with five-seconds left in the game to tie the contest at 54-54. Millikin's shot attempt as time expired was no good, sending the game to overtime.

Millikin led by as many as five points in the overtime period. Wheaton briefly gained a one-point lead at 60-59 with 1:52 left on a basket by Williams. The game was tied 63-63 with two-seconds left when Ratsch made a basket and was fouled. She made the ensuing free throw to give the hosts a 66-63 lead. A three-point attempt by Wheaton as time expired was no good as the Big Blue earned the three-point win.

Wheaton travels to Cornell (Iowa) on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup at 6:00 p.m.
