Ripon, Wis. - The Wheaton men's basketball team (4-2) suffered its first road loss of the 2019-20 season on Saturday as the Ripon Red Hawks topped the Thunder 68-66 in overtime. Ripon's Trent Jones hit the game-winning basket with less than three-seconds remaining in the first overtime to secure the win for the hosts.
Nyameye Adom led Wheaton with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds.
Collin Uveges scored 13 points for the guests.
Tyson Cruickshank scored 10 points and distributed eight assists.
Gavin Hawkins scored 10 points with five rebounds.
Andrew Williams tallied nine points off the Thunder bench and
Cade Alioth scored seven points with 10 rebounds and three steals.
Wheaton shot 35.3% (24-of-68) from the field, including 25% (7-for-28) from three-point range. The Red Hawks posted a 41.3% (26-of-63) field goal percentage, including 17.4% (4-of-23) behind the three-point arc. Wheaton shot 73.3% (11-of-15) at the free throw line and Ripon had a 70.6% (12-of-17) effort at the charity stripe. Ripon held a 40-39 advantage in rebounding and the Thunder had a 12-10 edge on the offensive glass.
Wheaton led early in the contest as the Thunder led by as many as six points with a 14-8 edge with 12:56 remaining in the first half. Ripon gradually chipped away at Wheaton's lead as the Red Hawks led 27-25 at the halftime intermission.
Ripon opened the second half by out-scoring the Thunder 16-6 in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Ripon led by nine points at 56-47 with 3:21 remaining in the game when Uveges made a key three-pointer. Uveges' trifecta 13-4 Wheaton run to close out the half to tie the game at 60-60 at the end of the second half. Cruickshank made a three-pointer with seven seconds left in the second half to tie the game at 60-60.
The contest was tied 66-66 with two seconds remaining in the first overtime when Ripon's Trent Jones made a basket to give the hosts a 68-66 lead. Adom attempted a three-pointer that fell short as time expired.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday night. The Thunder travel to Illinois Wesleyan Wednesday for the first CCIW game of the 2019-20 season.
