Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer season draws to a close with 1-1 draw against 15th-ranked North Park

Wheaton, Ill. - A late regulation goal cost the Thunder men's soccer team more than a potential victory on Saturday night. Needing a victory over #15-ranked North Park in Saturday's regular season finale to claim the fourth and final spot in next week's CCIW Tournament, the Thunder led for nearly an hour of play, but a late Viking goal forced a 1-1 draw. The draw knocked Wheaton out of tournament contention while also clinching an outright conference championship for the Vikings (13-4-1, 6-1-1 CCIW), who will serve as the top-seed in the upcoming tournament. Wheaton sees its season finish with a record of 10-4-4 overall and 3-2-3 in the CCIW.

Despite trailing for much of the night, North Park dominated the scoring chances 24-6 with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Hasten Biddlecome was excellent in net once again for the Thunder, stopping five shots and surrendering one goal. Mathias Stulen made one save and allowed one goal for the Vikings.

The opening half hour of play belonged to the defenses as both sides struggled to find quality scoring chances. Early in the 31st minute, Wheaton's goal broke the scoreless tie when Sean Dunlop unleashed a rocket of a shot from 30 yards out that blasted past Stulen inside the near post, giving Wheaton the 1-0 lead. A pair of late saves by Biddlecome moved the game to halftime with Wheaton still in the lead.

Wheaton's defense was able to limit the scoring chances for the Vikings early in the second half, but the Vikings were able to build momentum as the half went on by gaining more possession in the attacking half. North Park finally broke through in the 84th minute when Peder Olsen was able to create space and fired a strong shot past the onrushing Biddlecome to knot the score at 1-1.

North Park had two shots wide of the goal in the first overtime and Dillon Etter's double overtime shot attempt was blocked in the box in what proved to be two uneventful overtime periods as the game ended in a draw.
