Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder women's basketball team used a dominant third quarter to record its sixth-consecutive victory on Saturday night. Wheaton turned a two-point halftime deficit into a 62-52 victory. With the win, Wheaton improves to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the CCIW while the Pioneers fall to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the CCIW. Wheaton will remain at home next week with home games against Millikin and Elmhurst.
Wheaton finished the game shooting 40.7% (24-59) from the field while making six-of-16 three-point attempts for a 37.5% clip. Carroll finished at 40% (22-55) from the field despite being held to 16.7% (3-18) from beyond the arc. Both teams struggled from the free throw line with Carroll shooting 62.5% (5-8) and Wheaton shooting 61.5% (8-13). Despite being outrebounded for the first three quarters, Wheaton won the battle on the boards 39-35 including a 14-10 edge in offensive rebounds.
Wheaton jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead over the first four minutes of action behind a solid post presence and four points from
Hannah Frazier. Carroll responded with four straight points to pull within two points but a three-pointer by
Devin Kyler and a lay-up by Frazier put Wheaton ahead 13-6 as the Thunder held Carroll scoreless over the final three minutes of the quarter. Wheaton would push the lead back to seven at 17-10 early in the second quarter before Carroll went on a 9-2 run to pull even at 19. The teams traded buckets down the stretch until a late jumper by Alyssa Cruz gave the Pioneers a 28-26 halftime edge.
The third quarter started similar to the end of the second quarter with the led changing hands several times before Wheaton was held scoreless for over three minutes, trailing 32-31.
Kristi Demski broke the drought with a three-pointer at the 4:57 mark of the quarter, and followed with another one 46 seconds later to start an 11-0 Thunder run that was capped when Frazier connected on a three-pointer putting Wheaton ahead 42-32. Carroll quickly scored four straight points to pull back within six points but a three-pointer by
Devin Kyler with 15 seconds left in the quarter gave the hosts a 45-36 lead at the end of the quarter.
An early lay-up cut the lead to seven but a lay-up by
Hannah Williams and two free throws by Frazier pushed the lead back into double figures. Wheaton would push the lead to 15 points on a pair of occasions to make their largest lead of the night on Frazier's lay-up with one minute to play. Carroll was able to get within eight in the final minute but two free throws by
Kirsten Madsen in the closing seconds pushed the final score to 62-52.
Hannah Frazier led the Thunder with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double performance to go with four blocks and four assists.
Devin Kyler also filled the stat sheet with 18 points, five rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and two steals.
Jordan Myroth finished with 10 points and
Kristi Demski scored six points. Sierra Gruber led the Pioneers with 10 points.
