Women's basketball rolls to 61-51 road victory at Carthage

Kenosha, Wis. - The Thunder women's basketball team held Carthage to seven first quarter points and never looked back as the Thunder rolled to a 61-51 victory at Carthage on Saturday night. The victory gives Wheaton a season sweep of the Lady Runs and moves Wheaton's record to 16-4 overall and 10-1 in the CCIW, while also setting up a crucial first place battle on Wednesday at King Arena against Illinois Wesleyan. Wheaton's victory snapped an eight-game win streak for Carthage, dropping the Lady Reds to 14-5 overall and 8-3 in conference action.

Wheaton held the Lady Reds to just six first half field goals as the Thunder held Carthage to 34% (17-50) from the field including 35% (7-20) from the three-point line. Carthage hit 71.4% (10-14) on free throw attempts. Wheaton shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field with a 40% (10-25) showing from the three-point line. Wheaton converted on all three free throw attempts.

Carthage took the first lead of the game with an early three-pointer but Hannah Williams tied the game at the 8:43 mark and a Jordan Myroth lay-up a minute later gave Wheaton a lead they would not relinquish. Hannah Frazier and Devin Kyler added baskets as the Thunder built a 9-3 advantage en route to a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A Kyler three-pointer and a basket by Kristi Demski pushed the Wheaton lead to 19-11 with 5:35 to play in the half as both teams turned up the defense throughout the second quarter. Kirsten Madsen's three-pointer with 4:08 to play in the half re-established the eight-point lead at 22-14. That field goal would be Wheaton's last of the half, but Wheaton was able to hold Carthage to just one field goal in the same stretch, allowing Wheaton to take a 22-17 lead into the halftime break.

Jordan Myroth's lay-up with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter gave the visitors a 36-28 advantage before Carthage ran off eight straight points to pull even on Sammie Woodward's three-pointer with 1:55 remaining in the quarter. Hannah Williams responded with a three and Myroth added a lay-up to give Wheaton a 41-36 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Woodward opened the fourth quarter with a jumper but Williams started a 7-0 Thunder run with a three-pointer. Two minutes later, a Williams lay-up gave the Thunder a 48-38 advantage. Wheaton pushed the lead to as many as 13 points on a free throw by Madsen but never led by less than 10 points over the final four minutes as the Thunder cruised to the 61-51 victory.

Hannah Williams followed her 25-point performance on Wednesday with a 20-point showing tonight to lead all scorers. Hannah Frazier joined her in double figures with a 15 points and 13 rebounds for her third straight double-double. Frazier also added a game-high seven assists. Kirsten Madsen equalled her career-high with nine points and Jordan Myroth added eight points, six rebounds, and six assists. Maggie Berigan led the Lady Reds with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Autumn Kalis with 12 points and Sammie Woodward with 11 points.
