Thunder wrestling hosts the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational with second-place finishes for Odell and Fuentez

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder wrestling team hosted the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational this weekend in King Arena, with 38 teams from around the country. The Thunder wrestling team finished 18th this weekend.

36379Junior Isaac Odell and senior Carlos Fuentez (PICTURED LEFT) each finished second in their respective weight classes for the Thunder. The finals appearance for Odell and Feuntez marked the first time Wheaton had two wrestlers in the finals of the tournament since 2003.

Mount Union won the tournament for the first time in program history with 135 points. North Central finished second with 105.5 points, Baldwin Wallace tallied 98 points in third place, UW-Whitewater took fourth with 91.5 points and UW-Platteville rounded out the top-five with 80.5 points.

Odell opened the tournament at 184-pounds with a first-round bye. The junior won a 12-5 decision against Jordan Blanchard of UW-Eau Claire in the second round. Odell won a 9-2 decision against Alma's Dylan Seaton in the third round. Odell earned a 7-3 decision in the quarterfinals against Colten Cashmore of UW-Oshkosh. Odell advanced to the finals by winning a medical forfeit against Elmhurst's Mark Miller.

Odell lost a 13-11 sudden victory decision in overtime against top seed Dylan Roth of Heidelberg in the final at 184-pounds. Roth and Odell battled back-and-forth in the match with Odell tying the match at 11-11 with an escape in the closing seconds of the third period. Roth earned a takedown in the opening overtime period to pick up the 13-11 decision.

Fuentez, the No. 2 seed at 125-pounds, opened by winning a 20-3 technical fall (5:56) against Olivet's Garret Cleveland. In the second round, he defeated John Carroll's Andrew Perelka in a 10-4 decision. Fuentez rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the first period to win a 12-9 decision against AJ Schoenfuss of UW-Oshkosh in the quarterfinal round. Fuentez won a 3-0 decision against Millikin's Nick Mancini in the semifinal round. Fuentez face Mike Tortorice in the championship match. Tortorice, the recipient of the tournament's George Olsen Outstanding Wrestler Award, defeated Fuentez in a 16-0 technical fall.
