Arlington, Va. - The Thunder volleyball team saw its seven-match winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a pair of losses at the Marymount University Invitational. Wheaton's winning streak was brought to a close in a 3-0 defeat to Virginia Wesleyan (4-2) in their first match of the day. Wheaton closed the weekend with a 3-1 loss to Eastern (Pa.) moving the Eagles' record to 7-1 with Wheaton falling to 7-2. The Thunder will be off until Saturday, September 15, when they travel to Knox College to face Finlandia and Illinois College.
In the opener against Virginia Wesleyan, Wheaton dropped a close tight first set 25-21 before falling to the Marlins 25-18 and 25-15 in the final two sets of the match.
Colleen Smith and
Madeline Moore led all players with 12 kills apiece.
Kelly Thornton added seven kills with a team-high 19 assists. Wheaton struggled at the night against the Marlins, tallying just one block while Virginia Wesleyan totaled 10 team blocks.
Wheaton got off to a quick start in its second match, taking the first set against Eastern 25-20 before dropping three straight tight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19. Smith again led the Thunder attack with 13 kills followed by Moore with 10. Thornton paced the Thunder with 24 assists and added a team-high three service aces.
Mia Staub chipped in 15 assists. Jess Bosse recorded a team-best 28 digs followed by Thornton with 18.
