Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 15 Women's Soccer Falls to Kalamazoo College, 1-0

Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder women's soccer team had its three-match win streak to open the season snapped on Friday night in a 1-0 loss at home to Kalamazoo College (3-2). Wheaton (3-1) returns to action at Calvin College on September 12 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Wheaton maintained possession for the majority of a sluggish first half as the Thunder owned an 11-1 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes. Despite the shot advantage for the Thunder in the opening half, the match was a scoreless draw at halftime.

Wheaton had a wonderful scoring opportunity in the 70th minute as Anna Saunders delivered a cross to Madison Peebles, who was eight yards from the goal. Peebles blistered a shot at the net that was saved by Kalamazoo goalkeeper Hannah Wolfe to keep the matchup scoreless.

Kalamazoo tallied the winning goal in the 72nd minute on goal by Sarah George that was assisted by Joy Hunziker to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. George's long arching shot landed in the back of the net just over the out-stretched arms of Thunder goalkeeper Madison Lee. George's goal snapped Wheaton's streak of 320 minutes without a goal to open the 2018 season.

Wheaton had an opportunity to tie the match when a Thunder penalty kick in the 76th minute glanced off the cross bar and back into play as the Hornets held on to the 1-0 lead that would soon become the final score. Wheaton attempted 15 shots in the second half, with two Kalamazoo shot attempts in the half.

The Thunder out-shot Kalamazoo 26-3 in the match, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Kalamazoo goalkeeper Hannah Wolfe made nine saves to maintain the shutout.
