St. Louis, Mo. - The Thunder men's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak snapped in double overtime on Saturday night with a 2-1 loss at Washington University (Mo.). With the loss, Wheaton falls to 5-2-1 overall while the Bears are now 3-3 overall.
Early action was plentiful on Saturday night, with both teams tallying five shots in the first half. The Bears found the scoreboard first in the 29th minute when Will Sproule's header found the net off Ben Strozewski's cross and Ryan Sproule's header.
Wheaton pulled even late in the first half, when
Chase Gwynn used a give and go with
Shane Kopplin to break free behind the Bears defense and slotted the ball past Connor Mathes (
VIDEO).
Neither team could find the winner in the second half with both teams attempting six shots. and Wheaton's
Drew Cammarano stopping three Bears shots. WashU held a slim 2-1 shot advantage in the first overtime with none of the three shots ending up on frame.
A corner kick in the 108th minute provided the Bears with the opportunity for the game-winning goal. Makio Yamamoto's corner kick resulted in a free ball in the box which Kyle Perez knocked home, giving the Bears the 2-1 victory at the 107:57 mark.
Cammarano made five saves for the Thunder while Mathes stopped one shot for the Bears. WashU narrowly outshot the Thunder 15-13 with a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.
