Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton wrestling team hosted University of Chicago in a dual match (
full results) on Saturday afternoon in King Arena. Chicago earned a 26-14 victory against the Thunder.
Thunder All-American
Carlos Fuentez earned Wheaton's first victory of the match with an 11-4 major decision over Chicago's David Traub at 125-pounds. After a scoreless first period, the action picked up in the second period as Fuentez had a pair of takedowns and led 5-2 after two periods. Fuentez scored six points in the third period, including two takedowns to earn the major decision.
Freshman
Ethan Harsted won a 16-11 decision for the Thunder against Chicago's Louis DeMarco at 133-pounds. Harsted led DeMarco 3-0 at the end of the first period. Harsted had two takedowns and a reversal in a second period that had a flurry of activity. The Thunder freshman led 11-6 at the end of second period. He added two more takedowns in the third period as he earned the 16-11 decision.
Chicago picked up wins the next three weight classes. Senior
Jonavan Huggins won a 6-5 decision at 165-pounds against Chicago's Kahlan Lee-Lermer. Huggins led 4-2 after one period, thanks to two takedowns. Wheaton's senior gained an escape point in the second period to give him a 5-2 lead. Lee-Lermer obtained a takedown in the third period to cut Huggins' lead to 5-4. Huggins was awarded a point in the closing seconds due to Lee Lermer's stalling and the Chicago wrestler gained a point with an advantage in riding time to account for the 6-5 decision in favor of Huggins.
Thunder senior
Max Gierke won a 10-1 major decision against Chicago's Joseph Scheidt at 197-pounds.The two wrestled in a scoreless first period. Gierke led 3-0 at the end of the second period thanks to an escape and a takedown. The senior extended his lead in a third period that saw Gierke score points on a takedown and a near fall.
The Thunder wrestling team travels to the University of Dubuque Duals next Saturday. The Thunder will face UW-Stevens Point, MSOE and University of Dubuque in a series of dual matches at the event.
NORTH CENTRAL INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Wheaton sent several competitors to the North Central Invitational on Saturday. The Thunder placed 14th at the event.
Wheaton freshman
Natan Jara posted a 5-1 record in the 184-pound weight class at the North Central Invitational on Saturday. Jara opened his day with a 9-5 decision over Dubuque's Jack Allen and in the second round he was pinned (1:01) by Trine's Luke Carver. In his opening match of the consolation bracket, Jara pinned Dubuque's Terrin Rackouski at the 3:46 mark of their match. Hecontinued moving through the bracket by winning a 5-3 decision against Augustana's Hunter Holfcraft and he bested Dubuque's Armando Ferrer in a 2-1 decision. Jara also earned a 2-1 decision against Olivet's Higelmire to advance to the fifth place match. However, Jara was unable to wrestled in the fifth place match due to a NCAA rule that prohibits competitors from wrestling in more than six matches in one day.
