Wheaton, Ill. – The No. 1 seed Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team (16-3-1) hosted third seed Illinois Wesleyan (13-4-2) on Saturday night in the Championship Match of the 2018 CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament. Wheaton and the Titans played to a 1-1 draw at the completion of two overtimes.
A penalty kick shootout was held at the conclusion of the second overtime to determine the tournament champion and the recipient of the CCIW's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. Illinois Wesleyan advanced out of the shootout with a 5-4 advantage to win the tournament.
The NCAA will announce the 64 participants for the upcoming NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament on Monday at 12:30 p.m. (CST) at
ncaa.com. The Titans will represent the conference as the league's automatic qualifier for the tournament. Wheaton is a strong at-large candidate for tournament selection and the Thunder will found out about tournament participation on Monday afternoon.
Neither team scored in the first half tonight. Wheaton controlled the pace of play with a 12-1 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, including a 3-0 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton's first shot of the game came just 3:23 into the match and bounced off the crossbar, ricocheting back into play. Another strong opportunity for the Thunder came in the 33
rd minute as

Chelsea Gnan converted the penalty kick to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead. The Wheaton lead was short-lived as Illinois Wesleyan's Rosie Pettenuzzo scored on a lengthy shot from outside the penalty area. Pettenuzo's goal in the 80
th minute tied the match at 1-1. The final 10 minutes of regulation were scoreless as the match went into the first overtime. Wheaton out-shot the Titans 10-3 in the second half, including a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Wheaton had opportunities in the first overtime, with four shots on goal. However, a strong effort by IWU goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy sent the match into a second overtime. Wheaton had a 4-0 edge in shots, all on goal in the opening overtime. Neither team attempted a shot in a scattered second overtime period as the match concluded in a 1-1 draw.
The team's traded PK's in first four attempts of the shootout, as the effort was tied at two apiece after the first four shooters. Wheaton's third attempt hit the right post and bounced back onto the pitch. IWU's third attempt landed in the net to give the Titans a 3-2 edge through three frames. Both teams converted their attempt in the fourth frame as the shootout headed to the fifth frame with the Titans leading 4-3. Wheaton's fourth attempt bounced off the post and into the net to tie the match at 4-4 with one IWU attempt remaining. Pettenuzo converted the PK with a shot into the upper left corner of the net to award the Titans with the 5-4 edge in the shootout.
