Chicago, Ill. - A statement performance by
Brooke Barnes was the highlight of Wheaton's participation in the UChicago Fall Classic on Saturday. Behind Barnes, the Thunder women's team posted 134 team points while the Thunder men's team collected 122 points. Wheaton will next be in action on November 30 when the Thunder host the Wheaton Invitational at Lederhouse Natatorium.
Barnes cruised in the prelims of the 100-yard freestyle, posting the eight-fasted qualifying time in 54.02 seconds. However, in the final, Barnes cut over two seconds off her time to finish in 51.69 seconds, nearly a whole second ahead of the field. Her time 51.69 sets a new personal best and also is the fastest time in Division III this season, eclipsing Abigail Wilson of Kenyon's time of 51.75 seconds. Barnes also anchored Wheaton's 200-yard medley relay team, teaming with
Aleah Perkins,
Michaela Sandeno, and Abby Rutledge to finish in sixth-place with a time of 1:51.38.
Sandeno also turned in a sixth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:08.60. Rutledge finished third in the 200-yard backstroke, knocking over four seconds off her prelim time to finish in 2:09.61.
Chris Szymczak turned in a sixth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, dropping over four seconds off his prelim time to finish in 1:54.51. Szymczak swam the opening leg of Wheaton's 200-yard medley relay team, teaming with Ethan Kile, Christian Cameron, and Ben Griffith to finish in sixth place with a time of 1:35.96.
