Lisle, Ill. - The Wheaton volleyball team earned two wins on Saturday at Benedictine University's "Eagle Classic". The Thunder opened play on Saturday morning with a 3-1 (16-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-16) victory against Concordia-Chicago. Wheaton closed out the sweep with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-16) win against Benedictine. Wheaton improves to 14-16 overall and will closed out the 2018 season on Tuesday evening at North Park.
The Thunder earned a 3-1 win against Concordia-Chicago in Saturday's opening match. The Cougars won the first set 25-16 and Wheaton won the second set 25-12. The Thunder picked up a 25-17 victory in the third set and Wheaton closed out the win with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.
Against the Cougars, Thunder junior
Madeline Moore had a team-high 12 kills, on 25 swings and two errors for a .400 attack percentage.
Colleen Smith tallied nine kills and
Kelly Thornton added eight kills, with six kills for
Ellie Brown. Thornton had an attack percentage of .400, while Smith had an effort of .333 and Brown had a .308 attack percentage.
Thornton led the Thunder with 21 assists and
Marlee Anderson had 11 assists. Senior Jess Bosse had 16 digs against the Cougars.
Wheaton defeated the host Eagles of Benedictine, 3-0. Wheaton won the opener 25-21, the Thunder took set two 25-17 and the guests closed out the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third set.
Thornton led Wheaton against Benedictine with nine kills and she added 12 assists. Smith had eight kills, with no errors on 18 swings for a .444 attack percentage. Moore had seven kills, on two errors, with 14 swings for a .357 attack percentage. Brown,
Audrey Gerze and
Deborah Smith each added five kills in the win.
Anderson had a career-high 15 assists for Wheaton and Thornton added 12 assists. Bosse had a team-high 18 digs for the Thunder and
Colleen Smith added 10 digs. Brown contributed a team-high three total blocks.
