Thunder volleyball hosts Millikin and Dubuque in a tri-match

Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder volleyball match hosted the Wheaton Tri-Match on Saturday with contests against Millikin and Dubuqe. Millikin defeated the Thunder 3-1 (16-25, 30-28, 25-19, 25-21) in a conference match to open the event. Dubuque defeated the Thunder 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-22) in the finale today.

Wheaton looked strong in the first match, winning the first set 25-16. The second set was tightly contest as the Thunder had set point opportunities on three occasions, however, the Big Blue prevailed in a 30-28 victory. Millikin won the third set 25-19 and the Big Blue closed out the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set. Wheaton had 54 kills and posted a .240 attack percentage on 146 swings.

Madeline Moore led the Thunder with 17 kills, with just three errors on 32 swings for a .438 attack percentage. Colleen Smith added 12 kills, with three errors on 29 attempts as she registered a .310 attack percentage. Kelly Thornton had a .348 attack percentage with nine kills and just one error on 23 swings. Ellie Brown added six kills.

Thornton led the Thunder with 27 assists and Alecia Funk added 13 assists. Jess Bosse and Colleen Smith each had 20 digs for the hosts. Ellie Brown added four total blocks with three blocks apiece for Sadie Elsenbroek, Colleen Smith and Thornton.

Peyton Jackson led Millikin with 21 kills as the Big Blue had 64 kills on a .284 attack percentage. Rose Syversen led Millikin with 46 assists and Alyssa Vignos had 20 digs.

Moore and Audrey Gerze each had 11 kills for Wheaton in the match against Dubuque. Thornton had nine kills, Ellie Brown tallied seven and Colleen Smith registered six kills.

Thornton had a team-high 22 assists against the Spartans and Funk added 11 assists. Jess Bosse had a team-best 26 digs, with eight digs apiece for Gerze and Thornton. Deborah Smith had a team-high five total blocks for the Thunder.

Kara Wright led Dubuque with 11 kills and Kate Messino had 30 assists. Grace Strawser led the Spartans with 14 digs.

Wheaton returns to conference play at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Augustana.
