Rock Island, Ill. - The Thunder women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to eight straight games on Wednesday night with a 79-57 victory at Augustana. With the win, Wheaton improves to 14-4 overall and 7-2 in the CCIW. The Vikings fall to 12-6 overall and 5-4 in conference action. Wheaton will remain on the road on Saturday, when the Thunder travel to Decatur to face Millikin for a 5 pm tipoff.
Wheaton turned in a healthy shooting performance, hitting at 47.5% (29-61) from the field and 47.4% (9-19) from the three-point line, as well as connecting on 75% (12-16) of its free throw opportunities. The Vikings were held to 32.3% (20-62) from the field and just 17.4% (4-23) from the three-point line, but were 76.5% (13-17) from the free throw line. Wheaton outrebounded the Vikings 43-37 and assisted on 23 of its 29 made field goals.
The Thunder led the game wire-to-wire on Wednesday night, scoring the first five points of the game and jumping out to an 11-4 lead with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter. Wheaton closed the quarter with a
Hannah Williams jumper to earn an 18-12 advantage. Augustana was able to hang around early in the second quarter but a six-point run that held the Vikings without a point for over three minutes pushed Wheaton to a 38-24 lead. The Vikings closed the half strong, scoring four points in the final 12 seconds to pull back within 38-28 at halftime.
Augustana scored first in the second half to pull back within eight points, but Wheaton responded with a 12-3 run to take control of the game with a 50-33 lead, just shy of four minutes into the third quarter. Wheaton would add an 11-0 run later in the quarter to post a 63-40 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Thunder pushed the lead to as many as 29 points in the final ten minutes en route to the 79-57 win.
Hannah Frazier posted 15 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, also adding seven rebounds.
Maggie Dansdill scored 18 points with a game-high nine rebounds.
Devin Kyler added 10 points with seven rebounds and six assists.
