The Thunder women's soccer team plays Roanoke to a 1-1 tie

Lynchburg, Va. –
The Wheaton women's soccer team resumed play on Friday afternoon at Lynchburg College's Shellenberger Classic. The Thunder and Maroons (1-1-1) played to a 1-1 in the two-overtime match. Wheaton (1-1-1) will conclude its participation in the tournament at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) against the host Hornets of Lynchburg College.

Roanoke's Laura Garbarini broke a scoreless tie with just 18-seconds remaining in the first half with a header at the 44:42 mark of the match. Lucy Perry headed the ball to Garbarini for the go-ahead goal. The Maroons led 1-0 at halftime thanks to Gabarini's goal. The Thunder held an 8-5 advantage in shots during the first half.

Wheaton quickly responded in the opening minutes of the second half. Senior Morgan Whitman collected Anna Saunders' cross and scored the equalizer to tie the match at 1-1. Whitman's goal came just 3:21 into the second half as the score at the 48:21 mark of the match tied the contest at 1-1. The Thunder dominated play throughout the second half, out-shooting the Maroons 16-2 after the halftime intermission. Despite eight shots on goal in the half, Wheaton was unable to score a go-ahead goal as the match went to overtime.

Wheaton had a 1-0 advantage in shots in the first overtime. Wheaton resumed control of the matchup in the second overtime as the Thunder out-shot Roanoke 6-1, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal. Wheaton was unable to convert the scoring opportunities into a game-winner as the matchup concluded in a 1-1 tie.

Thunder goalkeeper Kathryn McGregor made two saves and allowed Roanoke's first-half goal in 110 minutes today. Roanoke goalkeeper Chris Martin made 14 saves and allowed one goal in the Maroons' net.

Wheaton out-shot Roanoke 31-8 in the match, including a 15-3 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded five corner kicks in the match and the Maroons had three.
