Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late goal not enough as Wheaton falls to Loras 2-1

Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder men's soccer team wrapped up the 2017 Bob Baptista Invitational on Saturday night with a 2-1 loss to Loras under rainy conditions at Joe Bean Stadium. Both teams finish the weekend with 1-1 overall records. The Thunder will be in action again next weekend when Wheaton travels to the Pacific Northwest to face Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.

Wheaton outshot the Duhawks 15-8, however, the Duhawks were able to earn all six corner kick opportunities of the match. Hasten Biddlecomb made one save and allowed two goals for the Thunder. Jacob Peterson allowed one goal and made six saves for Loras.

With heavy rains coming down and slickening the playing surface, Loras took advantage of a fast start to score the first goal of the game just 45 seconds into the match. Wheaton was able to find its footing in the match over the following minutes with several shot opportunities that were answered by Peterson and Duhawk back line. Despite the early goal, play leveled as the half wore on with a very physical match unfolding.

The rain subsided over halftime, allowing the second half to be played with faster tempo with a dryer field. Wheaton pushed for an early equalizer with Peter Whallon's shot in the 48th minute forcing Peterson into action in the Loras goal. The Duhawks were able to control the middle part of the half before tacking on an insurance tally in the 68th minute to go ahead 2-0.

Wheaton made one final push in the closing minutes and finally found the net with 56 seconds to play when Will Woodfin scored from the top of the box on a Tyler Robbins assist to cut the lead to 2-1. Loras would effectively drain the remaining seconds following the ensuing kickoff to seal the victory.
