Naperville, Ill. - North Central defeated the Wheaton Thunder (24-16/14-10 CCIW) baseball team 5-2 on Monday in the final regular season game of the 2017 CCIW schedule. Today's victory gives the Cardinals the 2017 CCIW Championship and North Central (21-15/16-8 CCIW) will serve as the host of this weekend's CCIW Baseball Tournament.
North Central scored five runs, on eight hits, with two errors in today's game. Wheaton tallied two runs, on seven hits with zero errors.
Thunder starting pitcher Alex Hanvey allowed five runs in two innings of work. Hanvey gave up four hits, allowed one walk and struck out one batter. Junior Ty Hoeksema pitched four innings of scoreless relief for the Thunder. Josiah Longenecker (PICTURED LEFT) pitched the final two innings in relief. The senior did not allow a run, scattered two hits and struck out three NCC batters.
Seth Meyer (PICTURED RIGHT) was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Thunder in the game. Peter Newman and Ben Brittain each hit a double in the game and Brett Albaugh tallied a triple. Albaugh drove in one run and scored a run for the Thunder in the game.
The Cardinals gained an early 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hanvey held the Cardinals scoreless in the bottom of the second inning. North Central scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to extend the hosts' lead to 5-0.
Peter Newman hit a one-out double to right field in the top of the fourth inning and Albaugh blasted a triple to the gap in right center field to drive Newman in. Two batters later, Ben Brittain reached on a NCC fielding error and Albaugh scored. Albaugh's run cut the North Central lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning.
Wheaton scattered three hits over the final five innings of the game as North Central hung on for the victory.
In Thursday's opening day of the 2017 CCIW Tournament in Naperville, No. 3 seed Wheaton will face No. 2 seed Augustana 30 minutes after conclusion of Thursday's first game. No. 1 seed North Central will host No. 4 seed Illinois Wesleyan in Thursday's opening game a 12:00 p.m.
