Rock Island, Ill. - The Wheaton College softball team split a conference doubleheader at Augustana College on Saturday afternoon. Wheaton won the opener today 4-3 and Augustana earned a 9-0 victory in the second game.
Today's 4-3 victory in the first game marked the 100th career win for head softball coach
Katie East. East, in her fifth season as Wheaton's head coach becomes the third coach in program history to reach the 100-win milestone.
Wheaton rallied to earn the 4-3 victory in the opener today. The Thunder scored four runs, on seven hits, with one error and Augustana registered three runs, on 10 hits, committing two errors. Starting pitcher
Kendall Kehres earned her sixth win of the season. Kehres worked seven innings, allowing three earned runs, on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Kelly Thornton was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs with one RBI.
Sophie Kent (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-3, scoring the game-winning run and a RBI. Thornton and Kent each hit a home run for the guests, while
Sage Miller and Thornton each hit a double.
Augustana gained an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Wheaton trimmed the Vikings' lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning as Thornton hit a leadoff double and scored later in the inning on a RBI by
Morgan Ryan.
Augustana increased its lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wheaton tied the game 3-3 with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Thornton hit a solo home run in the inning to cut the hosts' lead to 3-2 and Miller hit a double and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Kent gave Wheaton its first lead of the game with a solo home run over the leftfield fence in the top of the seventh inning for a 4-3 Wheaton lead. Wheaton turned a double play in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game and secure the victory.
Augustana won today's second game 9-0. The Vikings scored nine runs, on 13 hits, with no errors and Wheaton had zero runs, on two hits with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Jaclyn McLean took the loss in 3-2/3 innings. McLean scattered eight runs, on 10 hits with one strikeout. Kehres pitched 1-1/3 innings of relief. Kehres allowed one runs, on three hits, with one walk. Miller and Thornton hit singles in the game to account for Wheaton's two hits.
