Carroll takes a pair from the Thunder baseball team in a CCIW doubleheader

Carroll University swept the Wheaton baseball team on Friday in CCIW doubleheader at Pfund Stadium. The Pioneers (8-17, 3-7 CCIW) won the opener 6-3 and Carroll concluded the sweep by winning the second game 2-1 in 11 innings. Wheaton is now 16-12 on the season and 6-6 in CCIW play.

26887Carroll picked up the 6-3 victory in today's first game. The Pioneer scored six runs, on seven hits, with one error and Wheaton registered three runs, on nine hits with one error. Wheaton starting pitcher Christian Bolhuis (3-3) took the loss in five innings of work. Bolhuis allowed six runs, including five earned runs, on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Josiah Longenecker (PICTURED LEFT) worked four scoreless innings of relief. The senior held Carroll to just two hits with one strikeout and allowed no walks.

Andy Zuber was 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener. The catcher hit a double and drove in two of Wheaton's three runs scored in the game. Junior Seth Meyer was 1-for-2 with a triple with a run scored. 

Carroll gained a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the third inning. The Pioneers plated five runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Wheaton scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the guests' lead to 6-1. Meyer hit a one-out tripe in the seventh and he scored two batters later on Zuber's double to left centerfield. 

26888The hosts added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut Carroll's lead to 6-3. Zuber and Nick Mailman each registered RBI-singles in the inning. The Pioneers closed the door on Wheaton's rally to secure the 6-3 victory.

The Pioneers earned the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the second game as Carroll scored two runs, on nine hits with one error and Wheaton registered one run, on nine hits with one error. Freshman starting pitcher Alex Hanvey tossed seven innings for the hosts in the game. Harvey allowed one run, scattering six hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Ty Hoeksema (PICTURED RIGHT) worked three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and one strikeout. John Schmitz took the loss in one inning of relief. Schmitz allowed one run, on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. 

Johnny Peltz and Nick Mailman each collected two hits for the Thunder and Mailman stole a base. 

26886Carroll scored one run in the top of the first inning to gain the early 1-0 lead. Wheaton rallied with a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the matchup at 1-1. Pinch hitter Evan Ogden hit a one-out single and later scored when Peltz (PICTURED LEFT) beat out an infield single and advanced to second base on a Carroll throwing error. 

Carroll led off the top of the 11th inning with a single. Schmitz struck out the next two Carroll batters, but the game-winning run scored on a  two-out RBI-single.

The Thunder travel to Carthage Saturday for a doubleheader in Kenosha. The first pitch for game one against the Red Men is slated for noon.
