Decatur, Ill. - The Thunder baseball team finished a three-game series at Millikin by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Millikin won the series by winning the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 7-4 before Wheaton claimed the nightcap 5-0. Wheaton is now 12-8 overall with the Big Blue improving to 13-5 overall. Both teams finish the weekend 2-2 in conference play.
Millikin won the first game with seven runs on 12 hits with one error while Wheaton scored four runs on nine hits with two errors. In game two, Wheaton scored five runs on ten hits with no errors while Millikin was held to one hit in a shutout effort.
Peter Newman started the scoring on Saturday with a towering solo home run to right field in the top of the first inning of game one. Millikin answered with a two-out double and two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Brett Albaugh (PICTURED RIGHT) cut the lead to one with a solo home run in the top of the second inning and Wheaton pulled even when
John McKenna singled home Albaugh in the top of the fourth inning, tying the game at 3-3.
Millikin retook the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead 6-3. Wheaton would cut into the lead with a run in the top of the seventh inning but the Big Blue answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth to claim the 7-4 lead.
In the nightcap, Wheaton once again took the early lead when when McKenna singled in Albaught in the top of the second inning. After a
Seth Meyer single, Andrew Zuber ripped a single to right field, scoring McKenna to put Wheaton ahead 2-0.
That prove to be all the offense that Wheaton would need in the game as
Michael McCraith allowed just a lead-off single in the bottom of the second inning. McCraith issued six walks but struck out ten batters in a complete game shutout effort on the mound.
Wheaton would add a run in the top of the third inning when
Johnny Peltz plated
Jacob Zeller with a single. Peltz would score Wheaton's fourth run on
Ben Brittain's single through the right side of the infield in the top of the fifth inning. Brittain then scored Wheaton's final run on
Nick Mailman's double in the top of the eighth inning.
Wheaton will open a busy week of action on Wednesday night when the Thunder travel to Carroll University for a 6 pm first pitch. Wheaton will return home on Thursday to host a doubleheader against Elmhurst beginning at 3 pm.
