Offense struggles as Thunder baseball drops doubleheader to open spring trip

Punta Gorda, Fla. - The Thunder baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in the first of its seven games on its spring trip. Wheaton opened with a tough 2-1 loss to Heidelberg and capped the day with a 13-3 defeat at the hands of Mitchell College. Wheaton is now 2-3 overall on the season and will next be in action on Monday when the Thunder face Baldwin Wallace.

With a strong wind blowing in from left field, Wheaton took a while to find its offense on Saturday, failing to register a hit over the first five innings of action. Despite not logging a hit, Wheaton pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth inning by taking advantage of three walks and capitalizing on Brett Albaugh's sacrifice fly to pull even with the Student Princes at 1-1.

Daniel Bayer held Heidelberg in check over six innings of work, surrendering one run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Heidelberg pushed across a run in the top of the seventh inning off reliever John Schmitz to take the lead at 2-1. Wheaton threatened in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, stranding two runners in each inning but coming up empty. In the bottom of the ninth, the Thunder used a successful hit and run to put runners on the corners with one out, only to come up short with a game-ending double play.

Heidelberg scored two runs on seven hits with one error. Wheaton tallied one run on five hits with one error. Ben Brittain led the Thunder offense with two of Wheaton's five hits.

In the nightcap, Mitchell jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back in improving to 3-1 on the season.  The Mariners added two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth inning. Wheaton pushed its first run across in the bottom of the second inning when Johnny Peltz scored from second base when Peter Newman reached on an error. Noah Ritchie's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning plated Brett Albaugh and Nick Mailman followed soon after with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to account for Wheaton's offense.

The Mariners scored their 13 runs on 13 hits with three errors. Wheaton scored three runs on seven hits with three errors.
