Lisle, Ill. – The Thunder softball team traveled to Benedictine on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader with the Eagles. Benedictine won the first game 4-1 and the hosts rallied for a 5-4 victory over Wheaton in the second game.
Benedictine defeated the Thunder 4-1 in today's first game. The Eagles scored four runs, on 10 hits, with one error and the Thunder scored one run, with one hit and Wheaton committed two errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Kendall Kehres (4-8) pitched six innings. Kehres allowed four runs, including three earned runs, on six hits.
Kelly Thornton had Wheaton's hit in the opener.
Benedictine scored one run in the bottom of the first and another run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Thunder added scored a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the hosts' lead to 2-1.
Hannah Clark led off the top of the fourth inning by reaching on a Benedictine error. She scored two batters later on a RBI-single through the left side of the infield by Thornton. The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and another run in the bottom of the sixth to account for the 4-1 final score.
The Eagles rallied to earn a 5-4 victory in the second game today. Benedictine scored five runs, on four hits with no errors and Wheaton registered four runs, on eight hits with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Jaclyn McLean worked six innings. She allowed five runs, on four hits, with three walks and one strikeout.
Abby Butler pitched 1/3 of an inning of relief.
Lauren Meurer was 3-of-3 at the plate, with a walk. Meurer and McLean each had a double and
Kelly Thornton collected a triple.
Benedictine scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Wheaton scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Wheaton's four-run fifth inning was highlighted by a RBI-triple for Thornton and a RBI-single for
Megan Neuhaus.
Benedictine scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Thunder lead to 4-3. The Eagles scored twice in the seventh inning, including the game-winning run on a wild pitch, to earn the 5-4 win.
Wheaton will host Millikin Saturday afternoon to open conference play. The Thunder an Big Blue will play the first game of the doubleheader at 5:00 p.m.
