Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball falls 70-44 at Carthage

Kenosha, Wis. - The Thunder women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak stopped on Wednesday night in a 70-44 loss at Carthage. With the loss, #24-Wheaton falls to 15-4 on the season and 8-2 in the CCIW. Carthage is now 11-8 overall and 6-5 in conference play. Wheaton falls into a first place with Illinois Wesleyan. Wheaton will welcome Elmhurst to King Arena on Saturday night for a 5 pm tip-off with the Bluejays.

Wheaton shot just 34.5% (19-55) from the field including season-lows of 12.5% (2-16) from the three-point line and 40% (4-10) from the free throw line. Carthage shot 49.1% (26-53) from the field including a red-hot 64.3% (9-14) from the three-point line. The Lady Reds shot 90% (9-10) from the free throw line.

A six-point Carthage run midway through the first quarter gave the Lady Reds a lead they would not relinquish and broke an early 6-6 tie. Trailing 15-10 after a quarter, the Thunder trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter but fought back to within 23-19 with 2:39 left in the half. As they would throughout the night, Carthage responded with a three-pointer to stake the lead back to seven points, where it would stand at halftime with the hosts leading 28-21.

Wheaton opened the second half with four straight points but another Carthage three-pointer stopped the run. A 9-0 run later in the third quarter was capped by an Autumn Kalis three-pointer to put the Lady Reds ahead 44-30 after the third quarter. Six-straight points to start the fourth quarter, quickly put Carthage ahead 52-32 and the Lady Reds never looked back in the 70-44 victory.

Devin Kyler led the Thunder with eight points and six rebounds. Katie McDaniels and Kelly Thornton each had seven points. Madie Kaelber led a balanced Carthage attack with a game-high 14 points.
