Elmhurst edges the Thunder women's basketball team 71-68

Elmhurst, Ill. – The Thunder women's basketball team dropped a conference matchup on the road Saturday afternoon. Elmhurst College (4-4, 2-1 CCIW) edged the Thunder 71-68 to hand Wheaton (4-3, 1-2 CCIW) its second-consecutive road loss.

31093Maggie Dansdill led the Thunder scoring effort with 14 points and she added five steals. Devin Kyler (PICTURED LEFT) recorded a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Hannah Frazier scored 11 points with five rebounds and four blocked shots. Jordan Myroth scored 10 points with three assists. Jennifer Berg registered seven points and Jill Berg added six points.

Wheaton posted a 43.3% (26-of-60) field goal percentage, including 27.3% (3-for-11) behind the three-point arc. Elmhurst shot 36.8% (21-for-57) from the floor, including 55% (11-of-20) from three-point range. The Thunder shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the free throw line and the Bluejays had an 85.7% (18-of-21) effort at the charity stripe. Elmhurst out-rebounded the Thunder 43-33, including a 16-10 edge on the offensive glass.

Elmhurst led the Thunder 17-15 at the conclusion of the first quarter. Wheaton regained the lead for much of the early portion of the second quarter. The Thunder held a 26-22 advantage with 3:00 left in the second quarter. The Bluejays responded with a 14-4 run to close out the quarter, allowing the hosts to maintain a 36-30 halftime lead.

Elmhurst's Jasmin Bailey buried a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to conclude the third quarter as the hosts held a 58-52 lead to end the quarter.

Elmhurst's Mikaela Eppard made a free throw with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter to give the hosts a 59-52 lead; the seven-point advantage was the largest lead of the game for either team. Wheaton responded with six unanswered points to cut the Bluejays lead to 59-58 with 5:27 remaining in the contest.

The Bluejays led 63-61 with 3:06 remaining in the game when a pair of Kyler free throws cut the hosts' lead to 63-62. A defensive stop by the Thunder on Elmhurst's next possession was followed by a Hannah Frazier layup to give Wheaton a 64-63 lead with 2:27 remaining in the game. The basket marked Wheaton's first lead in the second half.

31138Elmhurst used free throws to regain a 67-64 lead with 1:39 left in regulation. Myroth (PICTURED RIGHT) made a pair of free throws with 1:28 left to cut the hosts lead to 67-66 with 1:28 remaining. An Elmhurst turnover on the ensuing possession was followed by two made free throws for Kyler to give Wheaton a 68-67 advantage with 56-seconds left in the game. The Bluejays missed a three-point attempt on the possession that followed, but a Wheaton turnover and Thunder foul sent Elmhurst's Kelly Weyhrich to the free throw line. She made two free throws with 18-seconds left in the game to give the Bluejays a 68-67 lead. A Thunder-three-point attempt with 13-seconds left fell short and was rebounded by Elmhurst. Weyhrich made two more free throws to extend the Elmhurst lead to 71-68 with eight seconds left. A Wheaton three-point attempt was missed and rebounded by Elmhurst to conclude the game and secure the victory for the hosts.

Jasmin Bailey led the Bluejays with 20 points, making six three-pointers. Hannah Henderson scored 11 points with eight assists. Eppard grabbed 22 rebounds with 10 points and three assists. Kaela Jones and Weyhrich each scored 10 points for the hosts.

Wheaton travels to Holland, Michigan next Friday and Saturday for Hope College's Post Exam Jam Tournament. The Thunder open action on Friday against NAIA opponent Rochester College (Mich.).
