Rock Island, Ill. - A late goal by
Drew Shay led the Thunder men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Augustana on Wednesday night. Wheaton has not allowed a goal in its three consecutive victories to improve its record to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in CCIW play. The Vikings fall to 1-10-2 overall and 0-5 in conference action. Wheaton will return home on Saturday night for a 7 pm kickoff against North Central.
Wheaton outshot the Vikings 11-9 despite the Vikings holding a 6-4 second half shot advantage. Both goalies had busy nights with Augustana's Jeremy Klaber saving five shots and allowing one goal and
Hasten Biddlecome making four saves.
Klaber was challenged early in the game, making two saves but it was a defensive stop by the goal post on
Will Woodfin's 13th-minute shot that loomed largest in keeping the game scoreless.
Wheaton would finally find its goal in the 80th minute when
Drew Shay found the net for his first goal of the season, finishing off an assist from
Jack Stradinger to make it 1-0. Augustana surged for an equalizer in the closing minutes, getting a header on frame early in the 89th minute, but Biddlecome was in the right spot to make the save and preserve the victory.
Wheaton will return home on Saturday night for the first of two games in a three-day span. Wheaton will host North Central at 7 pm on Saturday night and will host Illinois Wesleyan at 7 pm on Monday night in a rescheduled game due to a rainout on October 14.
